The original text was written in German by Paul Gerhardt in 1653, "Geh aus, mein Herz, und suche Freud" ("Go forth, my heart, and seek delight"). Joachin von Düben wrote the more popular Swedish translation, and Catherine Winkler wrote the English translation. The music can be sung in any of the three languages.
