Sara Teasdale's poem "Morning Song" sets the scene of a calm, clear, "diamond of a morning." The stars fade from the sky as the sun gradually peeks over the horizon, leaving only "the faint white moon." The moon, stripped of her celestial companions, becomes a metaphor for the dichotomy between companionship and freedom. The author consoles the moon--and herself--in her loneliness by reveling in the freedom this loneliness affords.

A diamond of a morning

Waked me an hour too soon;

Dawn had taken in the stars

And left the faint white moon.

O white moon, you are lonely,

It is the same with me,

But we have the world to roam over,

Only the lonely are free.
